Job Description

Responsibilities:

The Music Therapist is responsible for the assessment, development, and implementation of individualized music therapy interventions to support individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities within Intermediate Care Facility (ICF) programs. This role promotes Active Treatment through structured, evidence-based therapeutic interventions designed to improve communication, emotional regulation, behavioral outcomes, social engagement, and overall quality of life. The Music Therapist collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to ensure therapy services are aligned with Individual Program Plans (IPP), behavioral support strategies, and clinical goals, while maintaining compliance with regulatory and documentation standards.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct comprehensive music therapy assessments to identify individual strengths, needs, preferences, and therapeutic goals
  • Develop, implement, and regularly update individualized music therapy treatment plans aligned with IPP, BSP, and clinical recommendations
  • Provide individual and group music therapy sessions that support Active Treatment and measurable outcomes
  • Utilize music-based interventions to address areas including communication, emotional regulation, social skills, sensory integration, and behavioral supports
  • Collect, track, and analyze data to measure progress toward identified goals; ensure accurate and timely documentation in accordance with ICF and organizational standards
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members including Clinical, Nursing, Case Management, and Operations to ensure coordinated care
  • Participate in IPP meetings, interdisciplinary team meetings, and case reviews as required
  • Provide consultation and training to staff on the use of music-based strategies to support individuals throughout daily programming
  • Adapt therapeutic approaches to meet the diverse cognitive, physical, and behavioral needs of individuals supported
  • Maintain therapeutic materials, instruments, and equipment in safe and functional condition
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements, including ICF, ODP, and organizational policies related to Active Treatment and documentation
  • Support positive behavioral interventions and reinforce strategies identified in Behavior Support Plans
  • Assist in developing program-wide therapeutic initiatives that enhance engagement and quality of life
  • Provide input into program development and expansion of therapeutic services
  • Maintain professional documentation including assessments, progress notes, data collection, and treatment updates
  • Perform CPR, First Aid, and crisis intervention techniques in accordance with agency-trained protocols
  • Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC) required
  • Minimum one (1) year experience working with individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities preferred
  • Experience in healthcare, behavioral health, or residential settings strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement individualized treatment plans
  • Strong understanding of Active Treatment principles within ICF settings preferred
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret data to drive clinical decision-making
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and documentation skills
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated creativity and adaptability in therapeutic interventions
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) and electronic documentation systems
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while maintaining accountability
  • Must be able to perform CPR and crisis intervention using agency-trained protocols
  • Current, valid driver's license in state of residence, three (3) years driving experience in the United States, and acceptable driving record
