Job Description

About Mountain Roots Food Project:

Mountain Roots is a mission-driven nonprofit strengthening local food systems in the Gunnison Valley of Western Colorado. We lead district-wide Farm to School programs, steward community gardens, produce regionally grown food using regenerative agricultural practices, and support community food security through education, engagement, and access initiatives. Our summer camps are a cornerstone of this work - igniting curiosity, confidence, and connection to the natural world for K-8 youth across the Gunnison Valley.

Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced, passionate seasonal Summer Camp Manager to lead, coordinate, and elevate our outdoor, nature-based summer camp programs. The Camp Manager will oversee day-to-day operations, staff, and curriculum delivery; ensure an inclusive and safe environment for campers and counselors; and work closely with Mountain Roots leadership to uphold program quality and mission alignment. This role is ideal for someone who loves the outdoors, experiential & food education, and empowering youth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Program Leadership & Management: Oversee implementation of all summer camp programs, schedules and camper experience & safety.
  • Staff Supervision & Training: Mentor and lead camp counselors and seasonal educators.
  • Curriculum & Educational Delivery: Guide and support curriculum development rooted in environmental science, nature discovery, food education, outdoor/naturalist skills, and hands-on learning.
  • Community & Partner Engagement: Cultivate relationships with local experts, guides, and community partners to enrich camp programming.
  • Operations & Logistics: Coordinate daily operations and transportation. Implement camper enrollment procedures and camp rosters. Point of contact for families on logistics and feedback.

Qualifications:

We’re looking for someone who:

  • Is passionate about outdoor education, youth development, and connecting kids to nature and food systems.
  • Has strong leadership, organization, and communication skills.
  • Brings experience with hand-on learning, environmental/outdoor education, camp management, or similar roles.
  • Is adept at supervising and inspiring a diverse seasonal team of counselors and educators.
  • Can model safety-first behavior and nurture positive group dynamics.
  • Is flexible, creative, resourceful, and thrives in an outdoor and dynamic setting.
  • Holds a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
  • Spanish language skills and experience with diverse youth populations are a plus.

Why Join Mountain Roots?

  • Engage deeply with the natural world and support children in meaningful discovery.
  • Build professional experience in education leadership, program design, community engagement, and outdoor facilitation.
  • Work as part of a passionate, collaborative team strengthening food systems, environmental stewardship, and community health.
